Via Dolorosa
The Via Dolorosa, also known as the Way of the Cross, can be traced along the streets of the Old City of Jerusalem, ending inside the Church of the Holy Sepulcher. This path commemorates where Jesus walked while bearing the cross from the Place of Judgment (Praetorium) to Calvary. As you walk the streets and view the Stations of the Cross you can imagine what Jesus Christ experienced as He carried the cross toward Golgotha.
The first station starts with the Condemnation of Jesus and ends with the fourteenth station where Jesus is laid in the Tomb from which He rises from the dead. These are the Stations of the Cross commemorated on this famous path of suffering:
- Jesus is condemned by Pontius Pilate.
- Jesus receives his Cross.
- Jesus falls under the weight of the Cross.
- Jesus meets his mother.
- Simon of Cyrene helps Jesus to carry the Cross.
- A woman in the crowd wipes the face of Jesus.
- Jesus falls a second time.
- Jesus speaks to the daughters of Jerusalem.
- Jesus falls a third time.
- Jesus is stripped of his garments.
- Jesus is nailed to the Cross.
- Jesus dies on the Cross.
- Jesus is taken down from the Cross.
- Jesus is laid in the tomb.
